Within the works of Destroyers/Builders an interaction between the furniture pieces exist in an overarching inspiration; found in architectural elements, materials or building techniques. Linde Freya Tangelder, founder of the studio, strives for sensory relevance and cultural value in detail and larger scale. The works have a sculptural and architectural character, and balance between contemporary and traditional elements.
Inspired by architectural shapes, the furniture pieces highlight the field between industry and human, through diverse materials. Constructions are scaled down to human sizes, and translations result into sculptural gestures. Both low and high end materials get revalued, reconsidered and transformed. The interventions and finishes by hand, give these architectural objects a tactile aspect. The contrast in materials, the touchability, and the human traces that are still visible in the object, explain the method of Destroyers/Builders.
Destroyers/Builders takes on projects that range from commissions to self-initiated projects, and extends across the realms of both architectural furniture and interior projects. The practice is founded in 2014 and Antwerp & Brussels based.

Carine Boxy is a Belgian textile artist and designer based in Deurle. Each of her creations in naturally dyed sheepskin is unique and versatile (rug, cover, tapestry, …) and can be also seen as site specific to a residential or a hospitality project such as the restaurants by Sergio Herman. Her storytelling compositions are conceived as a patchwork quilt or carpet, a wall or oor arrangement, an object, a piece of furniture, with an extraordinary sense of tactility and wellbeing. The sheepskins bring – assembled together – the atmosphere of a wild life into the home. They reveal each one of a kind the true texture, appeal to the senses, thanks to their ultra soft material and a true combination of the hand and the heart. Carine has this attitude of the craftsman that creates from the sheepskin a human kind experience which brings the warmth in interiors.

With the Can sofa, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec seek to go beyond the creation of a practical, elegant and comfortable design. The intention is to reinvigorate the whole idea of the sofa, from something inherently complicated to something simple, relaxed and accessible. The sofa comes flat-packed and can be easily assembled at home from three basic elements – frame, cover and cushions.

British architect turned sculptor Nicholas Shurey resides in Copenhagen.
Nicholas Shurey believes furniture should fulfill more than just its function: it should be sculptural in its own right.
His beautifully carved wooden sculptures are designed for small spaces and sit somewhere between furniture and stand-alone objects. His work has a playful functionality, from his Little Lady sculpture in Danish maple, which disassembles to become a table and stool to the Eduardo Chillida-inspired smiley face bowl, handcarved in walnut.
Nicholas’ work investigates the negative space in the volume of his pieces, exploring single lines and curved forms. The timbre is sourced directly from forest and parks in and around Copenhagen. His latest series of large bowls are rich in texture with abstract facial features lending a touch of humour to the everyday object

The theme of Henry’s sculpture is the tension between the making and staging of figures that seem to belong to the real world, and the degree to which they echo our experiences and sympathies.
Sean Henry’s sculptures are individually painted by the artist using oil and other paints on the bronze or ceramic surface.
Henry has become adept at the manipulation of scale and almost always avoids life-sized representation. He explores the narrative capabilities of sculpture through a variety of strategies; by using more than one figure; by the economical use of contemporary iconography; and by a masterful ability to suggest psychological presence. His figurative sculptures are self-contained, often pensive, preoccupied by their inner imaginings. They exude what the ancient Greeks used to call sophrosyne, or self-control. This sense of being grounded is central to Henry’s figures and creates their strong physical presence, their sense of being and enduring. He has an ability to pare down his objective material and conceptualize the essential inner self whilst combining this with his consummate skill as a sculptor and painter and his understanding of form and mass. His first solo show was in London in 1988 and he has since gone on to exhibit his work widely in both solo and group exhibitions throughout the UK, USA, Sweden, Germany, Holland, Italy, Australia, Greece and Switzerland at some of the most prestigious galleries.
Past projects range in scale from Couple – the UK’s first permanent offshore sculpture – a critically acclaimed large scale, 13m high, 18m wide bronze and steel sculpture installed off the North East coast of England in Northumberland, to an indoor installation of nine sculptures at the new premises of Standard Chartered Bank in the City of London. Other notable works include the three figured Man With Potential Selves, located in the centre of Newcastle Upon Tyne and at the Cumberland Hotel, Marble Arch, London, Melancholia an intimate 10cm deep relief sculpture and John (Standing) a 31″ high depiction of a homeless man that the artist met in London.
In 2008 Scala Publishers published the first comprehensive monograph on Henry’s work, written by the art historian Tom Flynn, which was followed in 2011 by Scala’s publication of Conflux to mark the artists biggest exhibition to date at England’s Salisbury Cathedral, which attracted over 100,000 visitors during its run, a record for the Cathedral.
