Ceramics by Nathalie Du Pasquier

The Memphis Group co-founder returns to the world of ceramics with a series of sculptures and vases developed as physical alter egos of the abstract drawings and paintings that characterize the artist’s work.

Nathalie Du Pasquier is a French painter and designer, who has been based in Milan, since 1979. She is known as one of the founding members of the influential Memphis Design group, that was set up by designer and architect Ettore Sottsass in 1981. Her early work for Memphis is notable for its vibrant use of colour and arresting use of pattern. Alongside her two dimensional designs, she created a range of jewelry, furniture, textiles and clothing for Memphis, before solely dedicating herself to painting from 1987 onwards. All of her work has been internationally exhibited. She is a truly intuitive self-taught artist of high standing, her work has recently been exposed to a whole new generation, who are rediscovering her fine use of colour, abstract constructions and impossible structures. For HAY, she has created Embroidered and Printed Cushions, He She It Towel collection, and Nathalie Notebooks and Pencils.

CERAMICS BY BETHAN LAURA WOOD

Aldo Londi, the legendary artistic director of Bitossi, made his most famous collections by engraving, stamping and using relief within the moulds to give detail to the clay surfaces. It is these techniques that inspire Bethan’s new collection for Bitossi, for which she creates an expressive pattern, rhythm of graphic shapes and flowing lines derived from the stained glass window of the New Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mexico City). This pattern wraps itself around a variation of forms inspired by Bitossi’s 1950s to 1970s historical archive.

Bethan Laura Wood obtained a MA in Design Products at the Royal College of Art, under the tuition of Jurgen Bey and Martino Gamper. Since graduating in 2009, Bethan has built a multidisciplinary practice characterized by material investigation, artisan collaboration, and a passion for colour and detail.

Bethan enjoys exploring the relationships we make with objects in our everyday lives, and questions how they can become cultural conduits. She is interested in critical approaches to achieving sustainability in a mass consumption, production-driven context.

Bethan has undertaken multiple residency programmes, from London’s Design Museum to W Hotel in Mexico City, and regularly works with artisans from the regions of Venice and Vicenza in Italy.

Along side working closely with  Nilufar Gallery since 2011 for Limited edition and one off works, Bethan has been commissioned by a variety of international partners to create works and installations. Including, Abet Laminati, Moroso, Valextra, Kvadrat, Bitossi Ceramiche, Tory Burch, cc-tapis, Tolix and Hermés. Her work has been exhibited at institutions such as the V&A Museum of Childhood, Swiss Institute, New York, Daelim Museum and MOT, Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo.

Bethan regularly gives lectures and holds workshops; she currently teaches on the MA in Luxury at ECAL, Switzerland.

FIRE BASKET BY ADO CHALE

jpg

Ado Chale is a Belgian artist and designer best known for his exquisite mosaic inlays. Pieces of wood, minerals, or bone are sliced, arranged, and coated with resin to form the opulent surfaces. His furniture and domestic objects reference the natural world not only through the use of precious stones, metals, and organic materials, but also through the textures, patterns, and forms they express. “My designs have succeeded each other and have evolved over my discoveries, mostly in mineralogy, iron bronze and aluminum. Technical constraints have constantly pushed my development,” he has said. Born Adolphe Pelsener on March 18, 1928 in Brussels, Belgium—where he currently lives and works—Chale opened his first gallery in 1962. He exhibited jewelry and small side tables adorned with his unique inlay and sourced various gems and rocks via international travel. The self-taught craftsman then incorporated his acquisitions into larger pieces of furniture and sculptures attractive for their beauty and novelty in the 1970s. His work has been exhibited at the Ixelles Museum in Belgium, in France at the Museum of Fine Arts in Nancy and the Palais des Papes in Avignon, and in Japan at retail chain Seibu’s contemporary art museum.

TEXTILE CREATION BY IBAL STUDIO

RUUTU VASES BY RONAN ET ERWAN BOUROULLEC

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec’s  Ruutu Vases

Ruutu Vases Collection

The fluidity and vibrant feel of the mouth blown glass creates the delicate character for the new Iittala collectible vase Ruutu. Created by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Ruutu might be simple in shape but it takes the most skilled craftsmen in the glass factory to produce.

Ruutu, which means diamond or square in Finnish, is a collection of 10 vases available in five sizes and seven colours. When collected and combined, they make small seamless installations where both the strength and the delicate nature of the glass come alive. Like Ittala’s iconic Alvar Aalto collection, Ruutu is also created in Iittala’s Finland factory. However, where the Aalto vase embodies an organic form, Ruutu follows strict form and makes a perfect collectible.

Designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec explain, “Iittala knows very well how to manipulate colours. In Ruutu, we were able to create a delicate, watercolour-like palettes that intermingle with each other when combining sizes and colours. Ruutu allows a game of composition. We wanted to show the sophisticated range of Iittala colours while at the same time handing the job over to the user who will feel tempted to have several modules to create his or her own individual assemblage.”

Ruutu was an inspiring challenge in the Iittala glass factory given the many hours required to create symmetry, yet keep the feel of a handcrafted, unique product. “We were seeking to express the purity of glass blowing in this simple diamond shape,” explain the Bouroullec brothers.
