SIDEBOARD BY CHARLOTTE PERRIAND

IMG_4376
IMG_4375
The 513 Riflesso Sideboard was designed by Charlotte Perriand for the manufacturer Cassina, a leading producer of Italian luxury furniture with a contemporary aesthetic.

An important figure in the modernist movement of the 1920s and 30s, Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) collaborated with influential architects, such as Le Corbusier and Erno Goldfinger, as well as creating her own iconic designs, organizing events in promotion of her ideas and travelling widely.

Charlotte Perriand spend a good deal of time in Japan, and there’s an Asian influence to the 513 Riflesso Sideboard ,  a design which originally dates from 1939. This influence is apparent in its lacquered finish, its sliding doors and multiple cubbyholes, the temple-like overhanging eaves of the sideboard’s top and the rectangular feet which recall geisha clogs.

THREE STONES BY POL QUADENS

During his artistic studies, Pol met Pierre Sterckx, professor of aesthetics, who opened his eyes to art and philosophy. This meeting will be decisive in his future choices. He then discovered the profession of bodybuilder and, by working on the most prestigious cars, he learned to work with all the materials, the various techniques and the aesthetics. That’s when he started drawing objects and furniture.

In 1987 he created his compact disc shelf. The shelf is still in production twenty years later. He then participated in various furniture shows (Salone del Mobile, Interieur) and thus began his career as a designer. In 1995 Pol met an ex-engineer from Donnay (tennis racket manufacturer) who taught him composite materials and mainly carbon fiber. The C06 chair was born in April 1995, it will be the lightest chair in the world (950 grams). During his 6 months in Milan, Pol met people from Swatch Group. Carlo Giordanetti, Swatch’s artistic director, asked him to design watches for the group’s brands. In New York, he started working for Hamilton and finally for Rado. Back in Brussels at the end of 2000, Pol created the “strada”, a 10 cm high shoe without heels.

While still designing furniture. He creates bright tables for a downtown dance hall and also creates a brand new shoe shop for Biondini in Paris, at Galeries Lafayette. At the same time, furniture publisher Vange is interested in Pol’s collection of objects. In 2007 he designed a complete Corian collection for OVO editions and put the C09 (his new carbon chair) into production with this young publisher.

BOOKCASE D.357.2 BY GIO PONTI

Giovanni “Gio” Ponti, (Milan, November 18, 1891 – Milan, September 16, 1979), is one of the Italian masters of architecture. He was also a designer and essayist and one of the most important of the twentieth century. Other than the great architectural works which carry his unmistakable signature, he created a vast amount of work in the furniture sector. This is demonstrated in his three Milanese houses which were fully furnished in the “Ponti” style. The houses in via Randaccio, 1925, Casa Laporte in via Brin, 1926 and the last in via Dezza, in 1957 is an “expression” of his home design ideas.

CONSOLE BAGNERES BY SYLVAIN WILLENZ

NOGUIER SIDEBOARD

b_NOGUIÈR-Versant-Edition-335679-rel678b8c14.jpg

The Noguièr sideboard (Noguièr meaning walnut in the Basque language) has the strong allure of a classic. It revisits the ever-present wood/steel juxtaposition found in Brichet-Ziegler designs such as the H. Russell lounge chair. Noguièr’s defining feature is its clean lines, minimalism and the elegance of its base. The beauty of the walnut is highlighted by the exceptional artisanship of a master woodworker from the Basque Country.

ITALIAN CARLTON BOOKCASE BY ETTORE SOTSASS

italian-carlton-bookcase-by-ettore-sottsass-for-memphis-milano-1

The Carlton bookcase was designed by Ettore Sottsass for Memphis Milano in 1981 and was made circa 1990. This historical piece can also be seen in the Museum of Modern Art New York.

– –

Born in Innsbruck, Austria in 1917, architect-designer Ettore Sottsass grew up in Milan. He studied architecture at the Polytechnic of Turin, graduating in 1939. As a member of the Italian army, Sottsass spent most of World War II in a Yugoslavian concentration camp. After the war, he returned to Milan and opened his first studio in 1947. Like most Italian designers in these years, he focused on activities to help the postwar reconstruction efforts, including exhibition design.

In 1958, he began working with Olivetti, for whom he designed multiple landmark objects—including Valentine, the brand’s iconic 1969 red plastic typewriter—and transformed the large, cold electronics and office machinery of the day into playful, accessible objects of desire.

During the 1960s, Sottsass spent time in both India, where he was deeply affected by the country’s vibrant colors and mythologies, and the U.S., where he embraced pop art culture. These influences can be seen in Sottsass’s ceramic designs through the rest of his life.

In 1973, he cofounded Global Tools, an experimental design collective, alongside Gaetano PesceAlessandro Mendini, and others. During the ’70s, he collaborated with Alessi, Baccarat, and Knoll, designing everyday items like condiment sets and decanters. Other manufacturers that Sottsass designed for include ArtemideBitossi, O-Luce, Poltronova, Skipper, Stilnovo, and Zanotta.

In 1980, he formed the architecture/design firm Sottsass Associati. In 1981, he founded the Memphis Group, an influential, flamboyant design firm known for its brightly colored post-modern furniture, ceramics, and lighting. He remained with the Group until 1985, at which point he turned his attentions again to architecture. He died at the age of 90.
